What is the problem at hand? ๐ฆ๏ธ
For the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders of Cape York, keeping food fresh is a major issue. Cape York is subject to harsh wet and dry seasons, meaning that being able to store food all year round is a necessity to avoid starvation.
What is the solution to the problem? ๐ญ
Our Evaporative Cooling Barrel is a sustainable solution that focuses on storing food in all climates due to Cape York's lack of food preservation methods. With the extreme changes in weather, we aim to create a refrigerating system that uses primarily local materials and only renewable energy sources, working all year round. We will make the most of fast flowing rivers and the hot summer's sun in Cape York.
How does the product work?โ๏ธ
It has two sustainable energy sources being a recycled wood water wheel and a solar panel, which provide energy to power a pump. The pump draws water from the reservoir and keeps the re-used cloth saturated. A fan then draws air through it, inducing the evaporative cooling effect. Food in sealed bags is stored on clay shelves housed within an oil drum, repurposed from being commonly discarded on beaches by local industries. The bags of food are cooled by the constant cooling effect, giving the user easy access to fresh food.
What is the impact of the solution?๐จโ๐ฉโ๐งโ๐ฆ
The energy generated from the water wheel and the solar panel is completely green and eradicates the use of harmful fossil fuels, creating a positive impact on the
local communities. Rangers are widely respected within communities and we will utilise their authority to pilot the product and take feedback, further improving our solution. Picture-heavy leaflets written in native dialects will be available so that maintenance is simple and easy to follow for all. Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders will have a low maintenance and low cost way of storing and preserving food, therefore improving their quality of life.
